Description: Shakespeare - "All the world's a stage" is a famous monologue from William Shakespeare's comedy As You Like It (Act II, Scene VII). "Totus mundus agit histrionem" literally translates to "the whole world acts the actor" or "all the world is a stage", and was the motto of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.
Description: Shakespeare - "Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him, Horatio. A fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy. He hath bore me on his back a thousand times, and now how abhorred in my imagination it is". This is the iconic monologue spoken by Hamlet in Act V, Scene I of William Shakespeare’s play, where he holds the skull of Yorick, the late King’s jester. Hamlet reminisces about Yorick’s vibrant personality and physical affection, before confronting the grotesque reality of decay, which serves as a meditation on mortality and the inevitability of death for all people, regardless of status.
Description: William Shakespeare - The Globe Theatre was a theatre in London associated with William Shakespeare. It was built in 1599 at Southwark, close to the south bank of the Thames, by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men. It was destroyed by fire on the 29th of June 1613. A second Globe Theatre was built on the same site by June 1614 and stayed open until the London theatre closures of 1642. As well as plays by Shakespeare, early works by Ben Jonson, Thomas Dekker and John Fletcher were first performed here.
Description: Shakespeare - "All that glitters is not gold" means that shiny or attractive surface appearances can be deceptive and do not guarantee true value or quality. Shakespeare: William Shakespeare popularised the familiar phrasing in The Merchant of Venice, using the original word "glisters" instead of "glitters".
