Description: In cities around the world, pigeons suffer in silence, victims of a condition both preventable and cruel: stringfoot. Caused by human litter, thread, hair, string, fishing line, and other debris…this condition begins when these materials get caught around a pigeon’s toes or ankles. As the bird walks or flies, the material tightens, cutting off circulation, slowly strangling the limb, leading to infection, deformity, and often the eventual loss of a foot. Stringfoot is not natural. It’s not random. It’s caused by human neglect. Each piece of thread we drop, each tangle of hair left on the sidewalk, can become a noose. Disposing of waste properly, sweeping up hair and thread, spreading awareness can prevent immense suffering.
