Description: Kumasi is the historic capital of the Ashanti Kingdom and one of the most culturally important cities in Ghana. Founded in the late 17th century by Asante leaders led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu I and his spiritual adviser Okomfo Anokye, Kumasi became the political and spiritual center of the powerful Ashanti Empire. The city grew rapidly through trade in gold, kola nuts, and later cocoa, becoming a major center for commerce and traditional craftsmanship. Kumasi is also deeply connected to the sacred Sikadwa Kofi, believed to embody the soul and unity of the Ashanti people. Often called “The Garden City of West Africa,” Kumasi is known for its rich traditions, royal heritage, kente weaving, festivals, and vibrant markets like Kejetia Market.
