Digital Equipment Corporation 1957 Hat
Main Tag:

Description: Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) was founded in 1957 in Maynard, Massachusetts by Ken Olsen and Harlan Anderson. Operating under the name “Digital,” the company was a major force in the computer industry from the 1960s to the 1990s. It is best known for its leadership in the minicomputer market starting in the mid-1960s. DEC produced the PDP series, including the highly successful PDP-8 and PDP-11 minicomputers. Later, it achieved even greater success with the VAX “supermini” systems in the late 1970s, designed to replace the PDP-11.

Commodore 64 Makes it Real 1982 Hat
Main Tag:

Description: Long before floppy disk drives became common, many Commodore 64 owners loaded their favorite games from inexpensive cassette tapes known as datasettes. Connected through Commodore's proprietary Datasette drive, these cassettes stored programs as audio data, making them an affordable way to build a software library despite notoriously long loading times that could stretch several minutes. Throughout the 1980s, countless budget labels released games on cassette, especially across Europe, where the format remained hugely popular. While waiting for a game to load tested players' patience, the Datasette made the C64 accessible to millions of families and helped establish one of the largest and most beloved game libraries in home computing.

CompUSA 1984 Hat
Main Tag:

Description: CompUSA was a retailer and reseller of personal computers, consumer electronics, technology products and computer services. Starting with one brick-and-mortar store in 1984 under the name Soft Warehouse, by the '90s CompUSA had grown into a nationwide big box chain with at least 229 locations at it's peak. Crushed by competition from other brick-and-mortar retailers, corporate oversight which was out of touch with evolving market realities, and a failure to make a strong transition to online sales, CompUSA began closing what they classified as low performing locations in 2006. By 2008, only 16 locations were left, and by 2012, the remaining stores had all been sold off.
