They began as one, but the Cavalier King Charles has a longer nose in the 20th century when breeders made a join effort to return the breed back to it's origins before interbreeding with pugs to shorten their noses in the 17th century. The King Charles in the name is Charles II of England whose supporters called themselves Cavaliers.
