In Japan, as earlier in China, the mythical Phoenix was adopted as a symbol of the imperial household, particularily the empress. This mythical bird represents fire, the sun, justice, obedience, fidelity, and the southern star constellations. According to legend (mostly from China), the Hō-ō appears very rarely, and only to mark the beginning of a new era -- the birth of a virtuous ruler, for example. In other traditions, the Hō-ō appears only in peaceful and prosperous times (nesting, it is said, in paulownia trees), and hides itself when there is trouble. As the herald of a new age, the Hō-ō decends from heaven to earth to do good deeds, and then it returns to its celestial abode to await a new era.

The legend of the phoenix. A mythical bird that lives for an eternity in cycles of 500 to 1000 years, ending every life cycle by igniting in flames and turning to ash, only to be reborn from the very ashes itself. It's rebirth as a stronger and more powerful entity. Stories of the phoenix have been told as far back as ancient Egyptian times. This is a very personal piece. It's one that I have needed to create for a long time. It's also one that I didn't know how to create, or even if I would be able to. Like a phoenix, rising from the ashes, this strong, inspirational, rainbow kitty, reminds us that we can renew ourselves, and reach for the sky. Sometimes, we could all use some motivational magic.

I decided to create this print of a rising Phoenix because I wanted to give the impression of rising up through life's boundaries. As no matter what happens to the Phoenix, it always finds a way to come back and fight on. That is the way of a rising Phoenix.

Phoenix Rising

The Phoenix Inferno was an American indoor soccer team in Phoenix, Arizona, that played in the Major Indoor Soccer League from 1980 to 1983. In 1983 new ownership renamed the team the Phoenix Pride. The Pride folded at the end of the 1983–1984 season.
