Apollo 11 LM ascent stage in lunar orbit. Earth is at centre, with Mars a red dot at right of the Earth. NASA's Apollo 11 mission to the Moon took place from 16-24 July 1969. This mission was the first landing by humans on the Moon, with Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin descending to the surface in the Lunar Module (LM-5, Eagle), while Michael Collins remained in orbit in the Command/Service Module (CSM) some 110 kilometres above the surface. This picture was taken from the CSM of the ascent stage of Eagle as Armstrong and Aldrin returned to the CSM on day 6 of the mission (21 July 1969). The two spacecraft docked and the three astronauts returned to Earth, splashing down in the Pacific on 24 July 1969.

From lower left, the rocket consisted of the first stage, equipped with five F-1 engines and fuel used during take-off. Earthrise. This photograph of a blue & white Earth rising over the horizon of the Moon was taken from the Apollo 11 spacecraft in July 1969. The lunar terrain in the field of view is in the area of Smyth's Sea. Apollo 11 was the historic mission during which astronauts Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon.

Launch of Apollo 17. The Saturn V rocket carrying Apollo 17 blasts into the night sky at Cape Canaveral on 7 December 1972. This was the only night launch of the Apollo Lunar programme. Apollo 17 carried astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt to the Moon, Ronald Evans remaining in the command module in lunar orbit. Cernan and Schmitt landed in the Taurus-Littrow region on 11 December and left on 13 December. Cernan was the last man to stand on the Moon's surface. Apollo 17 returned to Earth on 19 December 1972 - the end of manned Lunar exploration for the time being.

The lunar horizon is about 570 kilometers from the spacecraft, whilst the Earth is 384,000 kilometers distant. In this view, the Earth is seen with the South Pole as the white patch at the left end of the terminator. Part of the west coast of Africa may be seen at the right end of the terminator, North and South America being hidden by cloud at the top of the disc. The lunar terrain in the foreground is near the eastern limb of the Moon, as viewed from Earth.

Apollo 11 was the American spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969.

Armstrong and Aldrin used the LM to land in the Sea of Tranquility region of the Moon on 20 July 1969, whilst Collins orbited in the Command and Service Modules.

The Artemis program is a United States-led international human spaceflight program. Its primary goal is to return humans to the Moon, specifically the lunar south pole, by 2025. If successful, it will include the first crewed lunar landing mission since Apollo 17 in 1972, the last lunar flight of the Apollo program.

Apollo missions to the Moon

The Grumann Space Suit, designed for the lunar exploration program in 1965 by Grumman / Space General for extended lunar surface operations. It allowed the astronaut to withdraw his arms from the flexible manipulators and work within the pressurized 'cabin' of the can enclosing his upper torso and head. Although tested, it was never deployed due to the end of the Apollo program. It was often depicted in Life Magazine in the 1960s, and was part of the equipment of the Major Matt Mason action figure.

Earthrise over Moon, Apollo 8. This famous image, one of the first of the Earth seen from another world, was taken by US astronauts on board the Apollo 8 spacecraft on 24th December 1968 as they orbited the Moon. The astronauts saw this view with the Moon's surface at right, but the image is usually displayed in this orientation to show the Earth rising over the Moon. Along with the first photographs of the Earth from space, this photograph become iconic for its depiction of the beauty and fragility of the Earth.
