The Dog-Faced Man / Vintage Circus Promo

The Amazing Blacaman billed himself as a “Hindu Animal Hypnotist,” though despite his intense afro and claims of middle eastern origins, he was actually an Italian circus performer. Blacaman made appearances around the world, and was a featured attraction of the Hagenbeck Wallace Circus when he came to America. Advertisements routinely featured Blacaman’s bulging eyes radiating mysterious beams to seemingly control savage beasts ranging from alligators and lions to snakes and bears. In addition to his circus performances, Blacaman appeared in the 1939 W.C. Field’s movie You Can’t Cheat An Honest Man.

Devlin is an American cartoon series that ran for 17 episodes from September 7 to December 21, 1974, with reruns airing until September 1976. The series, inspired by the popularity of motorcycle daredevils and stunt shows of the time, focused on a stunt motorcyclist with a traveling circus named Ernie Devlin and his siblings, Tod and Sandy. The original title for the show was Wild Wheels, and the title character was "Dare" Devlin. Concerned about potential criticism that the show glorified dangerous activity, the network nixed the title, changed the character's name to Ernie, and mandated the regular presentation of safety tips.
