Gilbert Baker created the original gay pride flag in 1978, and it originally had eight stripes. In the years since the flag has been reduced to six colors: the flag no longer uses hot pink, and the turquoise and indigo have been replaced with royal blue.* Various theories say that pink and turquoise were dropped because of fabric shortages at one time. Another cited is that when the flag was to be displayed in split fashion, on light poles on Market Street, it needed to have a maximum of three stripers per side.
