Gay Mugs
Description: The Saint Marks Baths opened at 6 St. Marks Place in the East Village of Manhattan in New York City in 1913. Through the 1950s, it operated as a Turkish bath catering primarily to Russian-Jewish immigrants on New York's Lower East Side. In the 1950s, it began to have a homosexual clientele at night and by the 1960s, it had become an exclusively gay bathhouse. In 1979, the bathhouse was refurbished, and the name was changed to New Saint Marks Baths, though it continued to be known simply as Saint Marks Baths. In 1981, the neighboring building was purchased, with plans to expand. The AIDS epidemic caused some activists such as Larry Kramer to urge its closing, and St. Mark's Baths would be shuttered on December 7, 1985.

Description: Tugs Belltown Tavern is considered by many to be the best Seattle gay bar of all time. The legendary Tugs opened their doors in October 1976 at 2207 1st Ave. and quickly showed the city what a gay bar could be. The tavern hosted a wide variety of musical style theme nights, making the transition from jukebox-only to live DJs in '78. They had a downstairs DJ booth where patrons could walk up to the window and look at the record being played. Customers would dance until dawn, often spilling into the streets or up on the roof in the small hours. Tugs also hosted live shows, movie nights, and tons of other regular events (every Saturday was Spaghetti Night!) which were all detailed in a monthly calendar that was designed and printed by hand.
