Following last year's debacle, Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole Council reckon they'll be much better prepared to handle an influx of visitors in 2021. Well, we'll believe it when we see it. The story of Bournemouth Pier begins in December 1847, when it was proposed that a company be formed to raise the £2,000 needed to fund the construction of a new pier. The initial scheme fell through due to lack of finance, and so it was decided to build a small jetty instead. The jetty was opened in 1856, but was damaged by a storm in August of that same year and had to be demolished. In 1859, a 1,000 foot (over 300 metres) long wooden pier was designed, and this structure was completed and officially opened in September 1861 at a cost of £3418. A Grand Day Out Number of views as of 3rd June 2017 = 530. The Grand Cinema Theatre in Westbourne, Bournemouth opened its doors on 18th December 1922 with a production of "Anthony and Cleopatra" performed on the stage. The following day, it screened its first film "A Prince of Lovers". The auditorium, complete with orchestra pit, had quite a unique feature, a sliding roof which could be opened in hot summer weather! The entrance was also topped by a revolving globe, which was illuminated at night. Initially an independent cinema, it was taken over by Savoy Cinemas and became part of the original Associated British Cinemas(ABC) circuit. St John's Moordown Number of views as of 13th March 2018 = 500. St John's Church, Moordown, Bournemouth, Dorset. The building of the church began in 1873 and it was completed ready for consecration on April 14th 1874. The architect was G.E.Street, who was well known for his Church designs in Victorian times. The last structural addition was the tower, added in 1923. It houses eight fixed bells, cast at a cost of £301. Unusually, the orientation of the church is north-south, rather than east-west, with the tower at the southern end. Date: 10th April 2008. Click here to see another of Bournemouth's churches

Pier, Poole Bay & Purbecks, October 2020 A shot of Bournemouth pier, taken from the East Cliff, with Poole Bay beyond and the hills of the Isle of Purbeck in the distance. Note the absence of people on the beach. At times during the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, the beaches were packed. Now, the beaches are almost deserted, yet cases in the area are on the increase.
