Electron flow. Computer model representing the flow of electrons through a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The 'gas' is composed of many free electrons, which can move around in only one plane. The 2DEG possesses an electric potential. Irregularities in this potential produce a 'bumpy' surface. The model shows the paths taken by electrons released one at a time into the gas. The negatively-charged electrons were deflected by the bumps in the gas, producing a branching pattern, with the greatest density of electrons represented by the darkest areas. The electron flow was modelled by Professor Eric Heller, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.

A mast cell is a leucocyte (white blood cell) that contains the chemical mediators histamine, serotonin and heparin. It is part of the immune system, and releases its contents during a localized inflammatory immune response to invading pathogens and during an allergic reaction. Histamine and serotonin cause the symptoms of allergies. Heparin is an anticoagulant which prevents abnormal clotting. Magnification: x7700 when printed at 10 centimetres across.

The oxygen ion has collided at left with a nucleus of lead, producing a spray of particles that shoot out towards the right- hand side of the chamber. One particle is a low- energy electron which spirals inwards in the chamber's magnetic field, its track growing more dense as it loses energy.

Sometimes referred to as 'spongy bone' or 'trabecular bone', cancellous bone is found within the middle of large bones. The honeycomb like microstructure gives the bone strength whilst saving weight and provides an open structure that can be occupied by bone marrow. The individual struts are called 'trabeculae' a latin term meaning 'little beam'. This image is taken using a method that shows highly mineralised bone as brighter shades, lower mineralisation appears darker; such methods are useful when looking at calcium-poor bone, such as that from osteoporosis patients. These Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria move using tiny hair-like flagellae. P. aeruginosa is common in the human intestine, but can cause serious wound, skin and urinary tract infections. It can also multiply in the warm, moist conditions found in baby incubators and ventilating machines and so be inhaled in large numbers. Such infections of the respiratory tract are usually harmless, but can result in dangerous pneumonia. Magnification unknown.

At centre a bacterium in cross section is seen with its thick cell wall (green). Above and below this bacterium are obliquely sectioned bacteria showing the irregular surface of the bacterial cell walls. Staphylococcus aureus commonly occurs on healthy human skin and mucous membranes, such as the lining of the mouth. It may, however, become pathogenic. Human embryo. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human embryo at the 16-cell stage on the tip of a pin. The ball of cells (yellow) of the embryo is known as a morula, a cluster of almost identical, rounded cells, each containing a central nucleus. This 16-cell embryo is about three days old. It is at the early stage of transformation from a single cell to a human composed of millions of cells. The cells multiply by repeated cleavage divisions (mitosis) and will form a hollow ball of cells (the blastocyst). Neurons are (also known as nerve cells) are cells of the nervous system that are specialized to carry messages through an electrochemical process. They have special cells called astrocytes (also known as astroglia) that are a type of neuroglial cell that provides support functions in the central nervous tissue and spinal cord. They perform a variety of tasks, from axon guidance and synaptic support, to the control of the blood brain barrier and blood flow. Magnification: x825 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.

Retina. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a resin cast of the retina, the light- sensitive membrane that lines the back of the eye. Blood vessels (red, purple) radiate out from the optic disc (yellow). The optic disc is the area where the optic nerve and blood vessels enter the eye. Due to this, it has no light-sensitive cells and is the cause of the blind spot. The cast was made by injecting resin into the blood vessels, followed by chemical digestion of the surrounding tissues.

Respiratory epithelium. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through the respiratory epithelium of the lung, showing microvilli (large, hair-like), cilia (small, hair-like) and the basal bodies that are the anchoring sites for the cilia. The basement membrane (bottom) can also be seen. The respiratory epithelium is the lining of the respiratory tract, which moistens and protects the airways. Mucous and cilia act to trap potential pathogens and foreign particles, preventing infection.

The allergens seen here include: long hairs such as cat fur, twisted synthetic and woollen fibres, serrated insect scales, a pollen grain, plant and insect remains. Asthma or hay fever are often a hypersensitive and irritant response to substances that, in most people, are harmless. Lens cells lack a nuclei, and the main constituent of the cells is the protein crystallin. Tightly packed layers of lens fibres (as seen here) are referred to as laminae. The lens fibres are linked together via gap junctions (one seen here) and interdigitations of the cells. The transparency of the lens is thought to arise from the regular arrangement of these cells. The blebs surrounding the cell wall here are extra cellular material shed by the bacterium. Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the membranes enclosing the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include intense headache, fever, loss of appetite, intolerance of light and sound, muscle rigidity and, in severe cases, convulsions, vomiting and delirium leading to death. Archaea, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Archaea are a group of single-celled microorganisms that are similar to, but evolutionarily distinct from bacteria. They are found in some of the most extreme environments on the planet. Magnification: x20,000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.

Kidney glomeruli, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The cells that usually surround the glomeruli have been removed to reveal the coiled capillaries at the core of the glomeruli. The function of the glomeruli is to filter waste products from the blood. After the reabsorption of certain substances elsewhere in the kidney, the liquid is transported to the bladder as urine.
