Description: Designated in 1956 amidst the geopolitical shifting of the Cold War, the 354th Fighter Wing is a U.S.A.F. combat wing based at Eielson AFB, 26 miles southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska, where it serves as America's premier force for Arctic airpower. The wing has flown numerous fighter aircraft over its history, including the RF-80 Shooting Star, F-100 Super Sabre, F-4 Phantom II, A-7 Corsair II, and A-10 Thunderbolt II. Today, the 'Icemen' of the 354th operate F-35A Lightning IIs and F-16 Fighting Falcons, providing considerable combat capability in a strategically important region. He chose 5J-K because of the large letter “K” on its tail after his sister ‘Kay’ (Katrina) which was also painted on the port side. This is one of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight spitfires MK356, an LF IXe, representing Johnny Plagis' aircraft which was LM214 and an LF IXc.

In 1959, it set 15 world records for in-flight performance, including absolute speed record & absolute altitude record. F-4 was used extensively during the Vietnam War. F-4 formed major part of US air power throughout the 70s & 80s, being gradually replaced by more modern aircrafts. F-4 remained in use by the US in the recon & Wild Weasel roles in Gulf War, leaving service in 1996. F-4 was also used in 11 nations.
