Fitzgerald Mugs
Description: SS Edmund Fitzgerald, the famous American freighter, sank in Lake Superior during a fierce storm on November 10, 1975, leaving behind the memory of its 29 crew members. When launched on June 7, 1958, it was the largest ship on North America’s Great Lakes and remains the largest to have sunk there. Its wreck was discovered in deep waters a few days later, broken into two large pieces, standing as a testament to an unforgettable legend in maritime history.
Description: There are over 6,000 shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, having caused an estimate loss of 30,000 mariners’ lives. It is estimated that there are about 550 wrecks in Lake Superior, most of which are undiscovered. At least 200 lie along Lake Superior’s Shipwreck Coast, a treacherous 80- stretch of shoreline with no safe harbor between Munising, Michigan, and Whitefish Point. The famous Edmund Fitzgerald lies just 15 miles to the northwest of Whitefish Point.
