Description: World War 2 - The Abbey of Monte Cassino, is a Benedictine monastery southeast of Rome. In the Italian Campaign of World War II the town of Cassino formed part of the German forces' Gustav Line, which aimed to prevent Allied troops from advancing northwards. During the Battle of Monte Cassino (January–May 1944) the abbey was heavily damaged, and was later destroyed in a series of heavy air raids. The Abbey was rebuilt after the war.

In May 1941, Hood and the battleship Prince of Wales were ordered to intercept the German battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, which were en route to the Atlantic, where they were to attack convoys. On 24 May 1941, early in the Battle of the Denmark Strait, Hood was struck by several German shells, exploded, and sank with the loss of all but 3 of her crew of 1,418.

Description: World War 2 - HMS Illustrious was the lead ship of her class of aircraft carriers built for the Royal Navy before World War II. Her first assignment after completion and working up was with the Mediterranean Fleet, in which her aircraft's most notable achievement was sinking one Italian battleship and badly damaging two others during the Battle of Taranto in late 1940. The carrier participated in the early stages of the Battle of Okinawa until mechanical defects arising from accumulated battle damage became so severe she was ordered home early for repairs in May 1945.
