And it made the KZ1000 one of the most feared track weapons of the era.

Wester Steven Cooley, (born June 28, 1956 in Los Angeles, California), better known as Wes, is an American former motorcycle road racer in the AMA Superbike class. He won the 1979 and 1980 AMA Superbike Championships on a Yoshimura Suzuki GS1000s.

Born in Upland, California, Lawson began his motorcycle racing career in the Southern California dirt track circuit. When it became increasingly difficult to find machinery able to compete with the dominant Harley-Davidsons, he switched his attention to road racing. In 1979, Lawson finished the season second behind Freddie Spencer in the AMA 250cc road racing National Championship. Afterwards, he was offered a ride with the Kawasaki Superbike team and won the AMA Superbike Series in 1981 and 1982. He also won the AMA 250cc road racing National Championship in 1980 and 1981 for Kawasaki.

The S model was a super sports variation of the standard GS1000, with a distinctive paint scheme and fairing. These Suzuki's were noted for their all round performance, a blend of good chassis and suspension and a powerful yet flexible motor.

Produced for only two years, 1979 and 1980, the Suzuki GS1000S was introduced just one year after the 1978 launch of the standard GS1000 and slightly sportier GS1000E models. With the GS1000, Suzuki had finally entered the liter-bike era, and they pretty much upstaged the competition in the process. The GS1000 wasn’t just fast, it had excellent handling topped off with effective brakes to pull it down from speed.
