Description: The Syracuse Nationals were an early American Basketball team that began playing in the National Basketball League in 1947. The Nationals were one of seven NBL teams that were absorbed by the Basketball Association of America to form the NBA in 1949. In 1963 the team relocated to Philadelphia and changed their name.
Description: The Syracuse Nationals began in 1946 as an expansion team in the National Basketball League. The Nationals were the NBL's eastern most team and were partly formed to counter the rival BAA's presence in major cities such as New York and Philadelphia. In 1949 the Nationals, along with the NBL, merged with the BAA to form the NBA. The Nationals won the NBA title in 1955. In 1963 the team was purchased and moved to Philadelphia and renamed the 76ers because Syracuse could no longer support an NBA team.
