Merle D. McNamee was a sheet metal contractor in South El Monte, California, who witnessed camping and recreational travel becoming increasingly popular in post-war America and decided to throw is hat in the ring. Utilizing his extensive fabrication skills, McNamee founded the McNamee Coach Corporation in 1952 and launched a product line called Kamp King Koaches that included slide in campers, van conversions, and even trailers. All told, McNamee was a true innovator in the RV industry, introducing concepts like foam sandwich fiberglass panels, over cab compartments, and slide out expansions that are still utilized today, and his Kamp King Koaches continue to be highly desirable by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Another shot from last years Gypsy Horse Fair at Appleby, where the Gypsies take their horses and show them off, trotting on Flash Lane, with a view to selling them on. This was a lovely Gypsy Cob and I loved it's mane and fetlocks as it galloped down the lane. I have added a few textures and blended the image in Topaz and photoshop.

In July 1974,thousands of vanners rolled into Bonner Springs, Kansas for the 2nd Annual Truck-In put on by Vans-Am and the NSVA. Unlike a lot of other truck-in events, the Bonner Springs Truck-In was exclusively open to vans. Vanners from all over the country converged on Cutty's Campground on Friday the 12th, and the event ran through sundown on Monday the 14th. The event had several big name sponsors and aside from three days of debauchery with like-minded van aficionados, the weekend included all kinds of van-related activities and contests... those were the days, man!

The oddly named HeadRest Van Conversions was a line of custom vans produced by Gerring Van Conversions of Elkhart, Indiana during the ’70s van craze. As legend has it, Gerring used the word ‘head’ in the name as it was common for hippie types to refer to themselves as heads, so HeadRest was an idea where these cool vannin’ hippies could crash out and rest.

The mid-'70s was a great time to be a vanner as van customizing shops were literally everywhere, offering everything from complete conversions to aftermarket parts and installations. NirVANa Customs of Chula Vista was no exception, and was probably best known for having the largest selection of custom porthole windows in America. Manufactured on site, NirVANa's portholes were first class and were available in nearly 100 different shapes. In addition to their SoCal shop, they did extensive mail order through vanner and hot rod mags.

The 'Love My Stones' ad campaign wasn't trying to get people to embrace their kidney stones, rather, they were trying to sell tires. It was a runaway hit with the '70s vanner crowd and the decals, t-shirts, and other promo items that were given away were almost more popular than the products they were promoting, and even now, decades later, they're highly prized collectibles. In 1958, Ray Frank, owner of a small trailer manufacturing company in Brown City, Michigan, designed and built a small custom 'house car' to take his family on vacation. His creation would be so well received, that he would not only coin the term motor home, but define the Class A RV. Frank would eventually have more orders than he could fulfill and sold his business to Travco who would continue to produce his designs for years to come. Travco would expand their offerings, including creating a line of Class C RV's based on the versatile A100 van platform. Dubbing these rigs 'Family Wagon,' they were offered in numerous configurations and with a choice of either the permanent Vista Top, or the Expandable Top.

Based in Omaha, Nebraska, Bird Engineering sold their minibikes and go karts through major department stores throughout the '60s and '70s. They offered several models of minibikes over the years, though the WarEagle was without question the most popular and as such, is one of the more common models one might find for sale today if you're in the market for an old school minibike.

Gerring Van Conversions of Elkhart, Indiana was at the forefront of the ’70s van craze, but as vanning began to slow, they adapted by offering custom truck conversions along the lines of The Warlock and Lil’ Red Express as well. In 1977, they rebranded as Conversions by Gerring, modifying their logo to include a step side pickup.

Released on June 23, 1987, the food truck themed Vanessa's Lunchbox ('squeals on wheels,' get it?) was an instant favorite among hobby grade RC aficionados. This 2WD monster van was competitively priced, and fun to drive, but sometimes quite challenging. Its top-heavy hard body van shell created a center of gravity, and the rigid rear axle also added to the problem. Coupled with its enormous tires and simple swing arm front suspension, handling was difficult, but it holds a place in the hearts of '80s kids everywhere.

Formed in 1987 under the moniker Katzenjammer, Kyuss would go on to be the coolest band during their lifetime. With scorching-hot riffs, serpentine grooves, and no rush to get anywhere faster than absolutely necessary, they truly encapsulated the vastness of the California desert from which they hailed, which makes their unique cult following all the easier to understand.
