Description: Sierra Entertainment was founded in 1979 as On-Line Systems in Simi Valley, California, by husband-and-wife duo, Ken and Roberta Williams. Sierra became known for defining the graphic adventure game genre, including the first such title, Mystery House, and many that followed including King's Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Gabriel Knight, and Quest for Glory. The company was renamed Sierra On-Line in 1982, and moved to Oakhurst, California. Sierra was acquired by CUC International in 1996, and remained with CUC as it was sold and renamed several times over the next few years. In 2002, Sierra On-Line officially announced the name change to Sierra Entertainment and would continue to publish until about 2009.
Description: Founded in 1994, 3dfx Interactive was a computer hardware company based in San Jose, California that specialized in the manufacturing of 3D graphics processing units, and later, video cards. 3dfx was a pioneer in the field of high performance video and graphics acceleration in the '90s, and by the end of 1997, the 3dfx Voodoo graphics card was by the most widely adopted 3D accelerator by both consumers and software developers alike. By the start of the new decade, several competitors were starting to catch up with the latest iteration of Voodoo cards, and 3dfx, and a series of bad decisions coupled with an increasingly volatile market led to the untimely demise of 3dfx in 2001.
Description: ATI Technologies Inc. was a Canadian semiconductor technology corporation based in Markham, Ontario, that specialized in the development of graphics processing units and chipsets. Founded in 1985, the company was listed publicly in 1993 and was acquired in 2006. As a major fabless semiconductor company, ATI conducted research and development in-house and outsourced the manufacturing and assembly of its products. With the decline and eventual bankruptcy of 3dfx in 2000, ATI and its chief rival emerged as the dominant players in the graphics processors industry, eventually forcing other manufacturers into niche roles.
