The unusual thing is that the lepers were, at the time, feared like the fire itself, and few were willing to look after those unfortunates, in fear of being infected. The Order of the Lazarites looked after them nevertheless, spreading knowledge about isolation of infectious diseases in Europe and giving rise to the word lazaretto, while also contributing to the development of modern, by the standards of those times, hospital facilities.
