Circa Socks
Description: “The Spirit of Israel.” Poster, circa 1948, with symbols for religious (menorah), military (uniforms), patriotic (flag), and agricultural (scythe) life. Designed by John Shayne and Robert Hopstein, published in the United States, public domain, via PPPA. John Shayne (1901-1977) was born Jacob Sheinfine in Ukraine. He was raised in the United States and moved to New York in the 1920s. He worked as a graphic artist, type designer, and painter. The poster was conceived and sketched by Robert Hopstein and painted (gouache on paper) by John Shayne. Using a variety of graphic design tools, I created a restored and enlarged reproduction of this historical Israeli poster, based on a rare photo of the original poster in an archive.

Ismar (Itamar) David (1910 - 1996,) born in Breslau, Germany, made Aliyah in 1933 and worked in Jerusalem. He was a leading graphic artist who produced many recruitment, morale, and public information posters. This poster features the “Hish” (Field Corps) Haganah emblem, a blue shield with the Israeli flag above Jerusalem’s ramparts. That emblem was designed by David and later influenced the design of IDF emblem. Using a variety of graphic design tools, I created a restored and enlarged reproduction of this historical Israeli poster, based on a rare photo of the original poster in an archive.

Graphic designer, Ernst Mechner (1895-1956,) was born in Germany. After making Aliyah, he produced informational and fundraising posters for Keren Hayesod, JNF, Histadrut, and others. The posters encouraged Aliyah (immigration) and Jewish population growth. Using a variety of graphic design tools, I created a restored and enlarged reproduction of this historical Israeli poster, based on a rare photo of the original poster in an archive.
