The first official Klements Sausage Race played on County Stadium’s state-of-the-art black and white scoreboard on June 27, 1993. The Polish, Bratwurst, & Italian Sausages raced over the harbor’s Hoan Bridge (above left). During the final season played at County Stadium in 2000, the virtual race turned real, with larger-than-life sausages now racing during every game. Description: The Dubois County Dragons were a southern Indiana independent professional baseball team active from 1996 through 2002. The Dragons made their home in tiny Huntingburg, which a population of just 5,598 souls in the 2000 U.S. Census. The Dragons were founding members of the Heartland League, an obscure independent loop that formed in 1996 with just four ball clubs in Illinois and Indiana. The Dragons remained in this shaky enterprise for its full three-year run until the Heartland League folded following the 1998 season. In 1999, the Dragons moved to the larger and more stable Frontier League where they would play for the next four seasons.
Description: Drag racing was a far different motorsport back in 1967, when construction concluded on the original quarter-mile. "Supertrack,"a ground up drag strip project funded by a hard-to-believe budget of over $1,000,000. In 1967, drag racing was still struggling to shuck its notorious public image as weekend recreation for juvenile delinquents wearing the inevitable black leather jackets and greasy jeans, but OCIR worked to change those perceptions by building a best-in-class facility that would soon play host to some of the top racing events in the country, including the PDA Championships where legendary drivers and their notorious cars brought the thunder to Orange County.
Description: Pioneertown began life as a livable Western film set in 1946. When Westerns fell from fashion, Pioneertown fell on hard times.
