Description: The naming of Deno’s 6 & 85 truck stop undoubtedly referred to the old two-lane highways this truck stop once served when it was built in 1947, which made it the oldest truck stop in the state. Located in Commerce, Colorado, just outside of Denver, the 6 & 85 wasn't a modern truck stop by any means and rather very old school. There weren't banks of diesel fuel pumps or even a mechanic on site - just a diner-style restaurant and separate bar surrounded by plenty of truck parking. Whether truckers were stopping off to grab a bite before hitting the road again or going to tie one on in the bar before sleeping it off in their rig, Deno’s was a go-to spot for truck drivers for decades, remaining popular right up until their closure in 2017.

Description: We're not sure if BJ Whistler is just an unfortunate name or a euphemism, but whatever the case, BJ Whistler's Tavern was a popular watering hole in Maryland's Deep Creek Lake region. Sitting lakeside off of Garrett Highway in the town of Oakland, BJ Whistler's was in operation for three decades before the owners decided to retire and shut the tavern down, leaving locals and tourists alike with a hole in their heart.
Description: It was at the end of 1957 when Seattle finally got its own dedicated jazz club when Pete's Poop Deck opened their doors. Having taken up residence in a former tavern in Pioneer Square on what was then known as Skid Road – named for the greased logs that were laid to shoot timber off First Hill to Seattle’s waterfront mills – Pete's Poop Deck was the place to be for enthusiasts of modern jazz. This low-fi establishment with its dim lighting and apple crate seating quickly grew in popularity and was THE place to take in some jazz music. From local musicians to national touring acts, Pete's Poop Deck was open nightly and promised "carefully calculated confusion," something they delivered on throughout the '60s.

Description: Walter Schneider and his partner B.M. Alexander were pioneers West Hollywood, opening their successful bar, The Gallery Room, in 1962, and also ran the hot club of the day, Up Disco. In the late '70s, Schneider and Alexander decided they’d like to live in Venice, and a friend found them a prime location on Abbot Kinney Boulevard to open a new gay bar at the beach. Opening their doors in 1979 under the name Roosterfish, the bar quickly became a gay hot spot on the westside. Roosterfish became a neighborhood favorite, and operated for decades until finally closing up shop in 2016.
Description: The Zombie Hut was a Hawaiian/Polynesian-themed restaurant, nightclub and Tiki bar located on Freeport Blvd. between Florin Road and Sutterville Road in Sacramento, California that originally opened in 1945. Inspired by the 1930s Tiki craze, the night spot's quirky name came from the 1945 comedy, Zombies on Broadway, that featured a fictitious nightclub in New York City called the Zombie Hut. The restaurant drew large crowds for years with Polynesian dancers, Hawaiian singers and musicians, and of course, countless exotic cocktails. The '80s saw things slowing down, and new owners tried saving it with limited hours, a change in theme, and a new menu, but in 1990, Zombie Hut closed its doors for good.
Description: Armadillo World Headquarters (also known as The 'Dillo or Armadillo WHQ) was an influential Texas music hall and beer garden in Austin, Texas. Located in an old National Guard armory tucked behind a skating ring at 525 1⁄2 Barton Springs Road, just south of the Colorado River and downtown Austin, The 'Dillo flourished from 1970 to 1980. The venue officially opened on August 7, 1970, with Shiva's Headband, the Hub City Movers, and Whistler performing, and caught on quickly with Austin's counterculture thanks to the cheap admission and that the hall tolerated illicit drug use. The final concert at the Armadillo took place on December 31, 1980. The sold-out NYE show featured Asleep at the Wheel and Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen.

While not exactly a dive bar by definition, it was just divey enough that dive bar aficionados would feel a certain kinship with the place, though better pirate themed bars tend to accomplish this feat routinely.

Description: The Peter Hand Brewing Company was an American brewery established in 1891 by Prussian immigrant, Peter Hand, in Chicago, Illinois. The brewery continued to grow and though it was officially closed between 1920 and 1933 as a result of prohibition, the company survived and expanded several times. In 1965, an investor group purchased the brewery and renamed the company Meister Brau, intending to further expand and begin national distribution. The company spent heavily on marketing, particularly in their hometown of Chicago, and sponsored all the local sports teams, as well as a popular radio show. When the brewery closed in 1978, it was the last brewing company in Chicago.
Description: For decades, the Buckskin Tavern was Fredonia, Arizona's local watering hole. The nondescript building sat back on a dirt lot, and utilized a worn out '55 Apache step side as an iconic landmark. With a full bar and package liquors to go, it was a place where locals and travelers along US 89A alike could count on a cold drink on a hot day. And being just five minutes from Utah, a lot of folks crossed the border for a 'real' beer or just to get a bottle of liquor to go on Sunday, back when Utah's laws on alcohol were stricter. The tavern featured multiple pool tables as well as the longest bar in the Southwest which, if you asked the bartender nicely, they would give your drink the home run treatment, sliding it the distance to you.

Description: The Dunes Cantina opened its doors in 1936 at 16232 Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach, California. It was dive bar that maintained it's wild west roots and was really only known to the few regulars that called it home over the decades, but that all changed after it got a cameo appearance in the 1979 horror movie, Phantasm. Of course, a few minutes of screen time in a cult classic flick doesn't exactly change a place's fate, as it only stuck around a few more years before becoming a sushi joint in 1983.
