After being turned down by established record companies, she founded Moon Records, one of Memphis's first independent labels. Along with releasing her own music, she recorded and promoted early rock and roll, rockabilly, and country artists, personally handling recording, engineering, pressing, and distribution in an industry overwhelmingly dominated by men.

Description: Founded in Chicago in 1958, Bandera Records was a small independent label run from the home of mother-and-son team Violet Muszynski and Bernie Harville. Overshadowed by local giants Chess and Vee-Jay, the pair built the label on determination and hustle—Bernie even drove a bus to help pay the bills. Known on Chicago's Record Row as "Vi the Record Lady," Violet discovered and developed countless artists, most notably The Impressions with Jerry Butler, whose success helped finance Bandera's launch. Named after Slim Whitman's Bandera Waltz, the label released eclectic regional sounds spanning blues, doo-wop, gospel, rockabilly, and country, making it a truly small but mighty label.
