Description: The first pre-recorded music cassettes hit the market in 1966, with an initial offering of just 49 titles. This was the first step in the portable music revolution, but it wasn't until the late '70s when portable cassette players explode, and retail music cassettes went right along with them. From massive dual deck boom boxes to belt clipped personal players, cassettes were the new way to listen to music. While existing record stores were already carrying cassettes, Tape World launched with an all cassette retail format in their mall stores from coast to coast. Sure, they sold select vinyl titles, but they were wall-to-wall cassette tapes, which gave their relatively small footprint stores the ability to carry a ton of stock.
Description: Lucky Four Records was a Chicago-based record company, located at 5411 W. Diversey Avenue, that existed from 1960 to 1963. The label was founded and owned by Lenny LaCour, who was also a singer, songwriter, and record producer. Lucky Four Records appears to have released only 45 rpm singles; some by LaCour himself, others by such artists as The Swinging Hearts, The Belvederes, and Eddy Bell. All Lucky Four releases are considered collectible, with #1012, "The Great Great Pumpkin", a Halloween novelty song by Eddy Bell particularly sought after.

Description: In 1908, the Sonora Chime Company of New York City patented its system of chiming bells for clocks, and the company began using the motto "clear as a bell" for their products. As time marched on, Sonora did its best to stay relevant, and began producing record players as the Sonora Phonograph Company in 1913. Throughout the Great Depression, Sonora saw rough times, but survived to emerge from bankruptcy in 1938 as the Sonora Radio and Television Corporation, and began producing radios. From stylish portable models to more traditional furniture type units, Sonora successfully positioned themselves as a premium radio brand at the upper tier of the market. Sonora radios became popular in France, and later much of Europe.

Description: Leroy Hurte was a musician, recording engineer, musician, educator, and promoter of African-American culture. He learned the business of manufacturing records while working at Allied Record Manufacturing in Hollywood in the 1930s. In 1939, Hurte opened the Flash Record Store at 623 East Vernon Ave, where he established Bronze Records, one of the first independently owned record labels to record African-American artists. Hurte is credited with having the first self-contained R&B recording and 78 RPM record manufacturing facility inside his record store, and as a result of his tenacity, recorded many artists that otherwise may have never been heard, let alone pressed to vinyl. All told, Hurte recorded more than 100 78's by the '50s.

Description: Turtle's Records and Tapes was a Southern USA retail chain founded in 1977 and based in Atlanta, that specialized in selling cassettes, records, and concert tickets; in the latter years of the chain's existence, it also rented movies in VHS format. Turtle's was recognized for its trademark logo, an upright standing turtle with its neck twisted around in several coils as he attempts to look backwards. It was known for its deep selection and one of the most varied video rental offerings in its markets before the arrival of the big chains such as Blockbuster Inc. Small gold coins with a turtle on one side and a record on the other were issued by the stores for gift certificates.
