Steer Socks
Description: A design with a Southwestern vibe, a steer skull, feathers and roses in dark brown. The phases of the moon and barbed wire span the space between the skull's horns. A birds nest sits on one horn, a lizard and spider in a web occupy the other horn. Roses and vines wind through the openings in the bone. Bird feathers flank both sides of the skull. Reproduced from my original ink line drawing.

Description: Bull riding rules are dead simple: The rider has to stay on the bull for 8 seconds once the chute opens, and only one hand may be placed on the rope or bull at any time. That’s it. Each rider is scored out of 100 points, 50 from the bull and the other 50 from the rider. Riders get points based on the control that they show throughout a ride, while the bull is scored on how disruptive they are to the rider throughout the ride. While it may just be eight seconds, that ride is one of the longest eight seconds you can experience in life and is not for the faint of heart.

Description: In 1953, Al Berger opened up The Burger Bar in downtown San Jose, creating a popular spot for college students to grab a bite. Over the next few years, Al opened up two more locations. In 1956, he opened the first Burger Pit in Cupertino that featured a charcoal fired grill. The Burger Pit was a hit, and Al opened more than 25 locations throughout the San Jose area over the years where folks could get their charcoal broiled Steerburgers and flat-iron steaks. In the mid-80s, most of the locations were sold to a national fast food chain, but Al kept the primary location on Blossom Hill Road, leaving his son to run the show after retiring in 1986. The Burger Pit enjoyed a run of over 70 years before sadly closing their doors in 2024.

Description: Kenny Monfort was a Colorado cattleman who wasn’t happy with his options for getting his product to the East Coast, so being the industrious type of fellow that he was, he put together his own trucking operation. Gate to plate was important to Monfort, so he wanted trucks with enough power to make the run in a timely manner. Not concerned with return loads, turning a profit with the trucking operation was not in the equation. Monfort teams ran five-hour shifts, and it’s easy to see why “The Monfort Lane” became a part of the trucking industry’s lexicon for the left lane, as the Monfort “Circus Wagons” were constantly pushing what their trucks could do to make time and blowing the doors off of every other truck on the road.
