Description: Sandwich - The Earl of Sandwich did not invent the concept of putting food between bread, which humans had been doing for centuries. However, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718–1792), popularized the handheld meal in 18th century England, lending it his title. While there are multiple accounts, the most famous story goes that in 1762, the Earl, a notorious gambler, was on an extended losing streak at the card table. Refusing to leave the game for a formal meal, he asked his servants to bring him salt beef placed between two slices of bread so he could eat with one hand without greasing his cards. His peers soon began copying his convenient order, asking for "the same as Sandwich," which ultimately birthed the modern term.
