Branching processes (dendrites) receive impulses from other nerve cells and pass them to the cell body (round, two at upper right). Each cell body also has an axon through which it relays nerve impulses to the dendrites of other neurones. Neurones allow information to be received, interpreted and relayed around the body. The grey matter of the cerebral cortex forms the outer layer of the brain that is responsible for conscious thought, memory and language. Magnification unknown.

Neurons are (also known as nerve cells) are cells of the nervous system that are specialized to carry messages through an electrochemical process. They have special cells called astrocytes (also known as astroglia) that are a type of neuroglial cell that provides support functions in the central nervous tissue and spinal cord. They perform a variety of tasks, from axon guidance and synaptic support, to the control of the blood brain barrier and blood flow. Magnification: x825 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.

Nerve cells. Light micrograph of nerve cells (neurones) from the cerebral cortex of the brain. These cells are from the hippocampus, part of the cerebral cortex concerned with memory. The hippocampus is rich in pyramidal cells such as these, which have numerous dendrites (right) trailing from one end of their cell body (dark areas) and one axon projecting from the other (left). Dendrites form junctions communicating with other cells, and signals are then relayed through the cell's axon.

The tissue has been tagged with fluorescent dyes: cell nuclei are red, neurofilaments are blue and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is green. Neurofilaments are structural proteins found in the axons (output processes) of neurons (nerve cells). The neurofilaments are concentrated in the inner white matter of the cerebellum. The cell nuclei are most abundant in the granular layer of the grey matter. The outer molecular layer of grey matter contains cell nuclei and glial cells rich in GFAP. Prion disease treatment. Artwork of three pyramidal neurons (nerve cells). The cell at left is healthy. The cell at back has died because of a prion (pink) infection. The cell at right is infected with prions and has been treated with a PERK inhibitor drug (yellow). Prions are abnormal proteins that cause a group of fatal neurodegenerative diseases including BSE in cows and CJD in humans. Abnormal infectious prions directly change normal prions found in the brain to the abnormal form and prevent the synthesis of essential proteins. This leads to neuronal death. PERK inhibitors allow normal protein synthesis to continue, preventing neurodegeneration. Such drugs also have the potential to treat Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
