Description: Released in 1993, Doom became one of the most influential video games ever made and helped define the modern first-person shooter. Players take the role of a lone space marine battling through a demon-infested research facility on Mars and eventually into Hell itself, armed with an increasingly destructive arsenal of shotguns, plasma weapons, and the legendary BFG 9000. Its fast movement, maze-like levels, heavy-metal atmosphere, networked multiplayer, and groundbreaking 3D-style engine made it a technical and cultural phenomenon. Just as important was its shareware distribution model, which helped Doom spread rapidly across PCs and college networks, turning it into a landmark title whose influence can still be felt in gaming today.
