Flynt fought several high-profile legal battles involving the First Amendment, and was paralyzed from the waist down from a 1978 assassination attempt. He was notoriously liberal, and frequently attacking conservative politicians and their values, so he threw his hat into the ring in the 1984 presidential elections, running as a Republican.
