Intersectional Tapestries

Diversifying your bookshelf means seeking out stories from perspectives and backgrounds different from your own, and often outside what is taught in the average curriculum. It means seeking out a range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and essays -- and graphic novels & comics, too! . As a white woman who loves reading & grew up in incredibly white, straight (R U R A L) New Hampshire, my local library didn't have a single lgbtq+ text (unless you count Fried Green Tomatoes, which, I mean, you should-- but I digress). The postage stamp sized library didn't have many books by/about POC either, and my high school library wasn't much different. My experience isn't dissimilar to many people in the US - and it's our responsibility to make up it.

Ideas for what to do when you want to understand more about a marginalized experience you do not share: 🌺 Read books, articles and content written by members of the marginalized group 🌺do a google search - there are lots of thoughtful guides for being a better ally / co-conspirator (prioritize those written by members of the marginalized group) 🌺seek out organizers of marginalized groups and follow their social accounts. Be present to learn, but not to take up space. 🌺take time to process your feelings and appropriately notice areas where you have privilege, and where you can work on your own biases .

You can't truly be a feminist unless you believe in equity for ALL. For too long, white women have not been in the fight for lives beyond our/their own. This has to change in order for us all to be free.
