Description: In 1965, the 1st and 2nd Battalions were deployed to South Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Division. 2nd Battalion were badly mauled during the Battle of Ong Thanh in October 1967. Early 1970 saw the end of the participation of the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 28th Infantry in this war.

The unit was activated at Fort Riley, Kansas with its organic elements concurrently constituted and activated, before being reorganized and redesignated on 2 March 1964 as the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry.
