Description: She wrote Frankenstein at 18 during a stormy week in Switzerland. The rest of the genre is still catching up. Mary Shelley (1797–1851) essentially invented science fiction, explored the ethics of creation and responsibility long before anyone thought those were science topics, and did it all while navigating a life that would have broken most people. This minimalist portrait captures the woman behind the monster. For gothic fiction lovers, Frankenstein fans, literary art collectors, and admirers of writers who changed entire genres before turning 20.
