Sierra became known for defining the graphic adventure game genre, including the first such title, Mystery House, and many that followed including King's Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Gabriel Knight, and Quest for Glory. The company was renamed Sierra On-Line in 1982, and moved to Oakhurst, California. Sierra was acquired by CUC International in 1996, and remained with CUC as it was sold and renamed several times over the next few years. In 2002, Sierra On-Line officially announced the name change to Sierra Entertainment and would continue to publish until about 2009.

By the start of the new decade, several competitors were starting to catch up with the latest iteration of Voodoo cards, and 3dfx, and a series of bad decisions coupled with an increasingly volatile market led to the untimely demise of 3dfx in 2001.
