Description: The Ainu are an ethnic group of related indigenous peoples native to northern Japan. Their ceremonial robes are decorated with beautiful geometrical patterns. They believed that these patterns warded off evil spirits, and protected the wearer. My illustration was inspired by their traditional crane dance.

The intricate designs are also referred to as "Mystic" or "Endless" knots because they symbolize infinite life. When a design such as this one has three points, it can symbolize mind, body and spirit. Another interpretation of the three points is the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
