Poodles are one of the most famous and recognizable breeds in the world. They're synonymous with French high society, but theory has it that they were actually bred in Germany as water dogs. They are known for their thick, curly, hair-like coat that is famous for shedding less than furrier coats which has led to a lot of cross-breeding to cultivate this coat.

The Chow Chow is a Basal Breed, meaning it existed before modern breed recording practices. They are a very old breed of dog originating from northern China. They have a double layer coat and a signature bluish tongue. This blue color extends to their lips and their oral cavities. While other dogs can have black or spotted tongues, Chow Chows are the only dogs known to have this odd bluish mouth coloration.

The Pyrenean Shepherd is an ancient herding dog from the Pyrenean Mountains in France. They are extremely active, called a "ball of fire," with mischievous energy. Herders in their homeland still use them to this day because they are energetic and attentive. They worked in tandem with the larger Pyrenean Mountain Dog, protecting flocks from wolves and thieves both in the heights and the lowlands.

The Scottish Deerhound is one of the giants of the dog world! Standing at an average of 30 inches tall, these rough-coated sighthounds were originally bred by native Scots to take down the wild red deer. Historically, they were known as the Royal Dog of Scotland and have earned a reputation as brave, regal, and noble. They’re an affectionate breed, although they have a strong prey drive so not always recommended for homes with small animals or small places like apartment because of their size. A Scottish Deerhound is happiest running over hill and dale, exhibiting their brilliant physique and noble bearing like the lords they are.

A British breed club has dubbed the Cairn terrier as "The Best Little Pal In The World" and fans of the Wizard of Oz would agree! Terry the Cairn Terrier played Toto in the 1939 movie. To keep it in the Garland family, Liza Minnelli famously owned a Cairn named Lily. Cairn Terriers were bred to be ratters in highland Scotland where property was marked by piles of stones called a "cairn." The tiny little dogs were dig into the cairn to get at the rats, which is where they found their name as well!

The Anatolian Shepherd is known as the "livestock guardian." They are of Turkish origin, and are loyal, territorial, and invaluable to their owners who still use them for herding and guarding as their ancestors did! As pets, they are large and high-energy, and friendly. The Kangal Shepherd Dog looks very similar to a fawn colored Anatolian and shares the Anatolian's size and skill. It is one of the oldest breeds in the world and still regularly used for guarding the homes and their owners' herds of cattle.

The Newfoundland was named for the Canadian region. It's known for its size, strength, gentleness, and loyalty. They were bred to assist fishermen on the high seas and have a thick insulated coat and webbed feet for that purpose. These traits also help them assist in water rescues. For all these reasons and more, they are often known as "the gentle giant."

Bernadoodles are a cross between Bernese Mountain Dogs and Standard Poodles. They are a larger doodle crossbred and are known for being smart, loyal, and good with kids and other animals.
