Wright brothers Kitty Hawk glider. Launch of a test flight of the 1902 glider built and flown on beaches near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA, by US aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright. Orville Wright (1871-1948) is piloting the glider. Wilbur Wright (centre, 1867-1912) and local fisherman Daniel Tate are holding the ends of the glider. The Wrights carried out a series of glider tests from 1900 to 1902, prior to their first successful flight in a heaver-than-air machine (17 December 1903). This glider design includes a rebuilt single vertical rudder. Hundreds of glides took place in 1902, the longest of 190 metres took 26 seconds. Photographed on 10 October 1902.

The day commemorates the first successful flights in a mechanically propelled airplane that was heavier-than-air. The planes were made by Orville and Wilbur Wright, or ‘the Wright brothers’ in 1903 near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. A proclamation is made annually, inviting Americans to celebrate the day with various ceremonies and activities.

The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna is a huge (up to 1500 lb) very fast (up to 40 mph) fish. They are found throughout the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas including the waters off the Outer Banks. Distressed design.
