This is my painting of the famous Stonehenge landmark that was painted with acrylic paint. It also includes watercolor with salt added for special effects on the stones. On the summer solstice at Stonehenge when the sky is clear, the sun rises behind the Heel stone, the ancient entrance to the circle, and rays of sunlight are channeled into the center of the monument. It is believed solstices have been celebrated at Stonehenge for thousands of years.

a symbol that goes back to Neolithic petroglyphs and appears in many different cultures. It’s thought to represent the movements of the sun through a year, marking the solstices and equinoxes. The orange part of the background texture was created by adding two types of salt to the wet paint, leaving a pattern that’s meant to resemble the surface of the Sun.

Arbor Low is a Neolithic henge monument situated High in the Derbyshire Peak District on Middleton Moor. It is often referred to as the Stonehenge of the North.

The Arabian Peninsula has been home to amazing cultures for thousands of years. From the Neolithic farmers, through the Dadani - the first-ever kingdom in Arabia - and including the Nabateans, who carved entire tomb cities from the rocks of the canyons. This is the Poulnabrone Dolmen, in the middle of the Irish Burrens (Co. Clare). It is the oldest dated megalithic monument in Ireland and is classified as a portal tomb.Excavations by archaeologist Anne Lynch in the 1980’s revealed the remains of 21 people in the main tomb chamber.

I took this photograph on a stormy day at a time when the rain had abated. The road we were on took us past this iconic landmark on the Wiltshire Plains, so we stopped. Today, Stonehenge is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it's so old people really don't know why it was built. Sun worship is the popular thought and who is to say that is wrong. Certainly the alignment of the stones seems to indicate an association with the Sun at the time of the summer solstice, but nobody really knows. What they do know is that some of the stones were probably brought there from south Wales; it's the closest known place in the UK where such stone exists. Castlerigg is perhaps the most atmospheric and dramatically sited of all British stone circles, with panoramic views and the mountains of Helvellyn and High Seat as a backdrop. It is also among the earliest British circles, raised in about 3000 BC during the Neolithic period.

The Carnac stones are an exceptionally dense collection of megalithic sites around the village of Carnac, in Brittany (France), consisting of alignments, dolmens, tumuli and single menhirs. More than 3,000 prehistoric standing stones were hewn from local rock and erected by the pre/proto-Celtic people of Brittany, and are the largest such collection in the world. Most of the stones are within the Breton village of Carnac, but some to the east are within La Trinité-sur-Mer. The stones were erected at some stage during the Neolithic period, probably around 3300 BC, but some may date to as old as 4500 BC.
