Pinnacles Pillows

It is 1.7 miles from the junction of US Highway 163 and Monument Valley Tribal Park Road, to the Entrance Station of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. At times traffic can flow slowly, as the herd of motor homes and cars in front of you lumber up, one at a time, to pay their entrance fee. The eye wanders, as you wait, because the west end of that eastbound Winnebago in front of you is just not that picturesque. What catches your eye is this, the view out your left side window, of mesas, buttes and pinnacles with names like Stagecoach, Big Chief, and Eagle, among others. This scene is just a taste of what you're waiting to see, making that wait seem just a little too long.

As the sun drops in the west the light is reflected onto the lunette, made up of sand dunes and eroded pinnacles known as The Walls of China which is on the eastern shore of the ancient lake. Lake Mungo National Park is a part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area, a chain of dried out lakes that were once strung between Willandra Creek and the main channel of the Lachlan River in Outback NSW. One of the more famous sites on the Isle Of Skye, in Scotland, is the Old Man Of Storr. The Storr is a rocky hill on the east side of the Trotternish peninsula. The Old Man, the tallest of the rock pinnacles on the Storr, is easily recognizable from many miles away on the eastern side of Skye. The area is another remnant of ancient landslides (locally called landslips) on the island.
