Description: Lilith is a character in Jewish mythology found earliest in the Babylonian Talmud, and is generally thought to be related to a class of female demons. In Jewish folklore, Lilith was Adam's first wife, who was created at the same time and from the same earth as he was. Lilith abandoned both her husband and marriage after refusing to become subservient to Adam. She was subsequently cursed by God for her disobedience when she would not return to the Garden of Eden after an affair with the archangel, Samael.

The owner originally wanted to call it the Silver Slipper, but there already was an existing establishment with that name. The problem was solved when that small operation was purchased and closed, and the Golden Slipper became the Silver Slipper. The casino was known for its rotating slipper that sat atop the casino. On April 30, 1968, the Silver Slipper was purchased by businessman Howard Hughes in his famous spending spree of buying Vegas properties, which included the Frontier next door.

Description: The Jockey Club is a condominium and timeshare resort at 3700 Las Vegas Boulevard South that opened in 1974. Forney Smith and his business associates had this nifty idea in 1972 that what the Strip needed were apartment buildings to house all those thousands of casino employees. He discovered pretty fast that with a few precious exceptions the idea fails because, to hear Smith tell it, “Little did I know, you don’t live where you work.” It was planned to have a casino, and chips were made for its use, but the casino was never opened.

Description: The Orbit Inn launched on Fremont and 7th Streets in 1963. It was the home of not one but two Space Age signs. The first featured a rocket and a globe encircled by orbit trails. Author Tom Wolfe cited it as an example of Las Vegas’s unrestrained “Late American Rich” style. The rocket portion of the sign was replaced by a more functional “Motel” element in the 1960s. Sadly, the motel is best remembered for a tragic explosion on the morning of January 7, 1967, when an Army deserter killed himself and five others by shooting a pistol into a stack of dynamite. The Orbit Inn closed in 1987. Today, the site is the location of the Downtown Container Park.
