Scientific and technological research

Forth Bridge. 19th-century illustration of the Forth Bridge spanning 2528 metres across the estuary of the River Forth at Queensferry, Scotland. This rail bridge has a cantilever design, the steel arches allowing sailing ships to pass beneath it. The bridge was designed by Scottish engineer Sir William Arrol, and was opened in 1890. Artwork from 'Chemins de Fer, Automobiles' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.

Orion spacecraft test flight launch. Orion spacecraft launching on a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Space Launch Complex 37, Florida, USA, on its first test flight at 7:05 EST on 5 December 2014. The uncrewed Orion spacecraft orbited the Earth twice, before landing in the Pacific Ocean. The test flight was known as Exploration Flight Test 1 (EFT-1). Developed by NASA, the first Orion crewed launches are scheduled for around 2023. The Orion spacecraft are intended for use in Earth orbit, and for human exploration of the Moon, the asteroids and of Mars.

LRO and LCROSS mission launch. Atlas V/Centaur carrying NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) on their missions to the moon. Lift-off took place from Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, USA, on 18 June 2009. The LRO will stay in lunar orbit for at least one Earth year, mapping the surface, surveying resources and identifying possible landing sites for manned missions. The LRO/LCROSS mission entered lunar orbit on 23rd June 2009. The LRO also carried a secondary payload, the LCROSS instrument. This carried out an impact experiment on 9 October 2009, successfully detecting water in a permanently shadowed crater at the Moon's South Pole.

Apollo 11 Moon landing. Artwork of NASA's Apollo 11 lunar module LM-5 Eagle landing on the Moon's surface. Apollo 11 was the first manned lunar landing mission, touching down at 20:17 UTC (universal time) on 20 July 1969. Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin were in this module, becoming the first men to walk on the surface of the Moon. Michael Collins stayed in lunar orbit in the command module Columbia. The Eagle comprised both a descent and an ascent stage. The ascent stage was used to transport Armstrong and Aldrin back to Columbia, leaving the descent stage behind on the Moon's surface. Both the Earth and the Sun are also shown here.

It was founded in 2002 and has developed the Falcon rockets and the Dragon spacecraft. Future plans include crewed flights to Mars.
