Description: The coelacanth is a prehistoric fish that was thought to be extinct until one was caught off the South African coast in 1938. The species evolved into its current form about 400 million years ago, surviving several mass extinctions. Coelacanths adults are about 6 feet long, and individuals have a lifespan of over 60 years.
