He had an extremely cocky personality and was known for his big ego, as was his R.I.O., Slider. His signature bleached hair tips are closely associated with the fact that he is "the best pilot" in the new class of TOPGUN students.

Top Gun Movie - Top Gun is a 1986 American action drama film directed by Tony Scott, and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, in association with Paramount Pictures. The screenplay was written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., and was inspired by an article titled "Top Guns" published in California magazine three years earlier. The film stars Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt. Cruise plays Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a young naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He and his Radar Intercept Officer, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Edwards) are given the chance to train at the US Navy's Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California.

Maverick - Captain Pete Mitchell (callsign: Maverick) is a US Naval Aviator and the protagonist of Top Gun. Throughout the movie, it is acknowledged that Maverick is a excellent pilot but has a dangerous and reckless flying style. Early scenes in the movie such as Maverick's encounter with an unnamed MiG-28, where he comes from above, canopy to canopy with the enemy pilot are proof of this. This both impresses some characters and annoys others due to the "danger" Maverick exposes them to.

McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber. It entered service in 1960 with the USN, it was also adopted by the USMC & USAF, and by the mid-1960s had become a major part of their air arms. F-4 is fighter with top speed of over Mach 2.2. In 1959, it set 15 world records for in-flight performance, including absolute speed record & absolute altitude record. F-4 was used extensively during the Vietnam War. F-4 formed major part of US air power throughout the 70s & 80s, being gradually replaced by more modern aircrafts. F-4 remained in use by the US in the recon & Wild Weasel roles in Gulf War, leaving service in 1996. F-4 was also used in 11 nations.

Jolly Rogers - VF-84, Fighter Squadron 84 was an aviation unit of the United States Navy. Originally established as VA-86 on 1 July 1955, it was immediately redesignated as VF-84, it was disestablished on 1 October 1995. It was the third US Navy squadron to be designated as VF-84. The squadron was nicknamed the Jolly Rogers and was based at NAS Oceana. It took the number but not the lineage of VF-84 the "Wolf Gang" and the insignia of VF-61 the Jolly Rogers.

Seen as a white streak, this airplane jets across the black sky in darkness of night as a trail of fluffy white clouds expand and mark the path of this aircraft at high altitude.

This Vietnam-era design features a groovy ghoulie Navy pilot leaving the flight deck with his guns blazing in a Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. Skunk Works is an official pseudonym for Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programs (ADP), formerly called Lockheed Advanced Development Projects. It is responsible for a number of aircraft designs, beginning with the P-38 Lightning and the P-80 Shooting Star. Skunk Works engineers subsequently developed the U-2, SR-71 Blackbird, F-117 Nighthawk, F-22 Raptor, and F-35 Lightning II, the latter being used in the air forces of several countries. The Skunk Works name was taken from the moonshine factory in the comic strip Li'l Abner. The designation "skunk works" or "skunkworks" is widely used in business, engineering, and technical fields to describe a group within an organization given a high degree of unhampered autonomy.

The 17th Cavalry is a historical organization within the United States Army that began as a regiment of cavalry after the Pancho Villa Expedition. The unit was constituted on 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army as the 17th Cavalry at Fort Bliss, Texas[1] and originally inactivated 26 September 1921 at the Presidio of Monterey, California.
