Description: The High Time Tavern opened its doors in 1935 in the small Arizona border town of Nogales, making it one of the earliest watering holes in the Arizona Territory after statehood. Aside from a full bar with an extensive tequila menu, High Time ran a full kitchen that made it a popular stop for anyone passing through between Tucson and Mexico. The tavern had live music every night on their respectably sized stage, most commonly featuring country and honky-tonk artists. When they closed up shop is unclear, but it appears that they were still hanging around in the late '80s. While they may be long gone, any business that can make a 50-year run is a success in my book.
Description: Tucson is very much a college town. Couple that with being a short drive to the Mexican border, and it should come as no surprise that there is no shortage of really good Mexican food options. In 1982, Dirty Sanchez Taco Shop added their name to the list of places to grab a bite. Located in the city's Barrio Hollywood neighborhood, Dirty Sanchez was an unassuming hole in the wall that offered traditional Mexican favorites. Their claim to fame was that they made everything from scratch using abuela's generational recipes. Nothing canned or microwaved – just made fresh daily Mexican food of a quality that rivaled pretty much everyone in town.
Description: Often cited as one of the most dangerous places in the world, Juárez, Mexico has been named the 5th most dangerous city for its high murder rate due to cartel violence in the Chihuahua state. While most crime is far removed from the tourist areas, the reputation is a hard one to overcome. Home to 1.8 million residents, Juárez is a short walk across the border from El Paso, Texas. For decades, a streetcar ran across the border, taking Americans to gamble in the casinos, drink during Prohibition, and party at the nightclubs. The trolley is long gone, but you can still walk into Juárez from El Paso and enjoy all that this fast-growing border city has to offer.
Description: For a little over fifty years, locals and those passing through the border town of Piedras Negras, in the Mexican state of Coahuila knew that Eberardo’s Cantina was the place to go for an authentic Mexican cantina experience. Established in 1965 by Eberardo Gutierrez, Eberardo’s Cantina was originally a traditional cantina that only served men, so it was more of a place to knock back beers and play dominoes and cards. Over the years, Eberardo’s became more of a restaurant where women and even children were welcome to enjoy regional botanas and scrumptious meals, though there was still no shortage of beers for those who imbibe.
