Nevertheless, this remaining transept, abutting the West Tower, exhibits a variety of styles. Although the walls of the transept are not uniform in style, on the whole they are a delight to witness.

Description: This is a view up into the octagonal tower of Ely Cathedral, in Cambridgeshire, England. I've long had a fascination with the remarkable medieval cathedrals of Europe. While they all follow a similar pattern, being laid out in the form of a cross, with a nave, presbytery, choir, high altar, etc., there's so much variance within the theme. They are clearly the product of craftsmanship of the highest order, but more importantly, they are imbued with a deep sense of faith.

When we were there, it looked as if they were setting up for a choral presentation, which only shows that if you build something that is truly useful, those who follow will look after it, even after 700 years.

Less well known is that "The Lord Protector" Oliver Cromwell closed the Cathedral for 10 years, due to a falling out with the local (Catholic) Clergy.
