Description: The Hull Brewing Company was established in New Haven, Connecticut in 1872 by Colonel William Hull. Shortly after it opened it was affectionately referred to as “Hull’s”. Brewing was nonstop at The Hull Brewing Company until prohibition hit in 1920. From 1920 To 1933, while most local breweries shut down, Hull’s stayed in business by producing ice and non-alcoholic malt beverages. Shortly after the repeal of prohibition in 1933, The Hull Brewing Company moved its operations to The Old Fresenius Brewery, located at 820 Congress Avenue, where it thrived. In it’s new location it ultimately became, to this day, Connecticut’s largest brewery. Hull’s was definitively Connecticut’s beer, however, mainly due to pressures from national beer brands.
Description: In January of 1898, a stockholders meeting was held where New York interests who recently gained control of a majority in shares were represented. One of the decisions made at the meeting was to change the brewery's name to the Harvard Brewing Company in order to distinguish the concern from other Consumers' Brewing Companies in Chicopee, Massachusetts and in New York state. Another change was in personnel, with the addition to the office leadership of Ward B. Holloway who previously worked for the Rochester Brewing Company. Later in the year, Holloway took over the position of secretary and general manager from John Coffey while within a few years, John Joyce was dropped down to vice president.

Description: The brewery did well in the 1930s and 1940s. It was a regional beer judging from where their cans have been dumped, mostly southern California and Arizona. Zobelein died in 1936 and his son took over the brewery. They introduced cans in 1937 choosing flat tops such as my can-of-the-month above. They sold Eastside Beer, Eastside Ale, and in 1939 introduced a premium beer called Luxury Extra Dry Pilsner. Eastside Beer remained their big seller however. (Eastside Ale cans are quite scarce and Luxury was never canned). They also canned Brown Derby Beer for Safeway stores in the 1930s.
Description: On January 1, 1893, six local breweries joined forces and opened Grand Rapids Brewing Co. Over the next two decades, they built a monumental brewery at the corner of Michigan Street and Ionia Avenue, what is now the site of a state office building. Capitalizing on the location’s ample supply of fresh spring water and a refreshingly drinkable flagship beer, Silver Foam, GRBC became one of Midwest’s largest and best-known breweries. In 1920, Prohibition brought that success story to a crashing halt. When the bans on alcohol production and sales were lifted, GRBC merged with several other breweries and eventually left town.
