Description: Released in 1992, Sleep’s Holy Mountain, is a landmark of stoner and doom metal, capturing the San Jose trio, Sleep, as they transformed the crushing weight of Sabbath into something hypnotic, psychedelic, and distinctly their own. Built around massive, fuzz-drenched guitar riffs, rumbling bass, hazy vocals, and heavy, deliberate drumming, the album rolls along like an endless procession of prehistoric riffs and bong smoke. Tracks such as “Dragonaut,” “The Druid,” “Aquarian,” and the sprawling title track helped establish the blueprint for the ’90s stoner-metal sound, combining metal worship with cosmic imagery, repetition, and an almost trance-like sense of groove from one of the truly defining albums of the genre.
