Description: The earliest instance of "Join the Army; travel to exotic, distant lands; meet exciting, unusual people and kill them" that we could find is from a 1971 recruiting flyer that had been preserved in the Library of Congress. Variations of it have made their way into several war movies over the years, and it remains a popular phrase worn by vets by way of patches and t-shirts to this very day. Somewhat ironically, the same phrase was utilized by antiwar protestors during the Vietnam War.

Description: For those that aren't familiar with the "Join, or Die" graphic, it is a historic image created by Benjamin Franklin around 1754 and represents the quest for strength and freedom through solidarity. Each part of the snake represents one of the first colonies of the United States.
Description: The Join or Die drawing of a Snake, is the earliest known pictorial representation of colonial union produced by an American colonist in Colonial America. It is a woodcut showing a snake cut into eighths, with each segment labeled with the initials of one of the American colonies or regions. New England was represented as one segment, rather than the four colonies it was at that time. Delaware was not listed separately as it was part of Pennsylvania. Georgia, however, was omitted completely. Thus, it has eight segments of a snake rather than the traditional 13 colonies.The poster focused solely on the colonies that would go-on to make up the present-day United States, due to their shared identities as Americans.
