Panthera Bags
Description: Re-visiting a series I had done some work with in the past, these animal faces are specifically designed for prints and to look especially great on apparel. I wanted to try and emphasise colour in this piece since the panther itself is black so I focused on just painting the highlights and leaving the majority in darkness. I painted the highlights in purples and blues to give the colour some vibrancy and strong saturation, and they worked really well against the black. I initially considered just painting the highlights grey, but quickly realized that the piece would look much better with a stronger colour scheme.

To do this piece I started with a base of blues, purples and yellows and then (the time consuming part) I painted the fur texture by scraping away white acrylic paint using a cocktail skewer. It may be difficult to see in this scanned version, but each area of the white fur has a raised line texture. I had to do this so that the colours wouldn't end up flat and dull and I found a brush was too broad for t
Description: The lion (Panthera leo) is a species in the family Felidae and a member of the genus Panthera. It has a muscular, deep-chested body, short, rounded head, round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of its tail. It is sexually dimorphic; adult male lions have a prominent mane. With a typical head-to-body length of 184–208 cm (72–82 in) they are larger than females at 160–184 cm (63–72 in). It is a social species, forming groups called prides. A lion pride consists of a few adult males, related females and cubs. Groups of female lions usually hunt together, preying mostly on large ungulates. The lion is an apex and keystone predator; although some lions scavenge when opportunities occur and have been known to hunt humans, the species typically do
