Description: The Salton Sea is the largest lake in California by surface area, and its very existence is a total accident. In 1905, flooding caused the Colorado River to spill over the man-made irrigation canals to pour into what was then known as the Salton Sink – a 40-mile-long dry desert basin. It took two years to stop the flooding, during which the Salton Sink had filled up and formed the Salton Sea. it didn’t take long before people began flocking to this desert oasis as a weekend getaway to picnic and play in the lake. While smaller settlements had popped up over the years, Salton City was established in 1958 and the town’s population quickly grew to 15,000 people, with thousands more arriving on the weekends.

Description: Rolling Acres mall opened in Akron, Ohio on August 6, 1975. There was one anchor, Sears, and 21 additional stores. JCPenney opened a year later as a second anchor. A new wing was added in 1977, along with a third anchor store, Montgomery Ward. Further expansion in 1978 added a new two-story wing called the Promenade, which included a food court called “Prom-N-Eat” (later renamed “Picnic Place”) and local chain O’Neil’s as a fourth anchor. The mall was foreclosed in June 2016 and demo began in 2017.
Description: Fire Point Emergency Stop, Urbex Given the chance I'll take Urbex or urban exploration over most types of photography but these place are becoming less and less mainly due to health and safety. This was taken 11 years ago in a disused malt kiln (Paul's Malt) in my home town. This huge building is long gone but a venture inside was very interesting. The apocalyptic remains may not be to everyone's taste but they appeal to me for some strange reason. Description: Opening its doors in 1924, the 700 room Hotel Cecil’s developers had planned for the massive Beaux Arts-style building to be a premier destination for business travelers visiting downtown Los Angeles. Initially billing itself as “a popular hotel of fine distinction” in advertisements, the Great Depression’s arrival just five years later meant the influx of wealthy business travelers became a slow trickle and that tagline was changed to “a popular priced hotel of fine distinction.” Located just steps from what would become known as Skid Row, the now discount hotel became found itself as a housing option for the local transient population, which was estimated to already surpass 10,000 people in the 1930s.
